The Lassithi plateau
is famous for its white-sailed windmills, (more accurately, wind-pumps),
made to a local design, that have been used since the early XXth century to irrigate the land.
The most important attraction of Lassithi is the Cave of Psychro, near the homonym village.
Mainly known as Diktaean, the cave has played an important role in ancient times, due to a myth that put the birth of Zeus here. Hence, Lassithi is also known as “Bethlehem” of Greek Mythology. Also, according to the tradition, inside that cave, Zeus mated with Europa, who gave birth to Minos, the King of Knossos.
Krasi is situated at the foot of Mount Selena in an altitude of 600 m. and is a charming destination. A small traditional village, hidden in the middle East of Crete at the region of Heraklion. There you can find the majestic plane tree, a monument of Nature protected by the state, which is over 100 years old. Krasi belongs to a protected natural area (NATURA 2000) and is surrounded by a beautiful forest of evergreen oaks and kermes oaks with several walking trails to explore.
