The Amazing South

The Amazing South

We wander through the mainland and gorges and arriving to the magnificent south part of the island. Astonishing beaches together with a steep and thrilling landscape, will constitute some of your strongest pictures and memories of Crete.

Spili – the village of the fountains

Spili is known for its cooling shady plateias and running waters. The focal point of the village is its 'kefalovrissi' or Lions Fountain, a series of lion heads with lovely cool spring water trickling out of them. On a dry and harsh Mediterranean island such as Crete, you have to understand what a miracle running water is, and natural springs are mothers’ nature's gifts.

Kourtaliotiko Gorge

Kourtalioti or Kourtaliotiko gorge is in the south of the prefecture of Rethymno, on our way to the south coast. It is one of the most impressive natural attractions of the prefecture Rethymnon. According to tradition, when a strong wind blows, it creates whistles passing between the hollows of the rocks, which look like "kourtala" that beat, that's why it was called "Kourtaliotiko".

Preveli – Kalypso beach

Preveli Palm beach is a remarkable and one of the most wonderful beaches of Crete, as it offers relaxing and pleasant time under the shadows of the palm trees. Also is protected from Natura 2000 Network

Kalypso beach is a narrow cove of about 100 meters long that is formed between huge vertical rocks. The bay ends at a small, sandy beach, 2 meters wide. The bay is called Karavos but many call it the "Pirate’s Fjord" because the small cove used as a shelter for pirates during the Byzantine times. The water is so clear that the visibility and clarity from above is astonishing – you can make out every single detail in the sea bed. Its color changes depending on the depth. In some places is deep blue and in some others blue-green.

Plakias

Plakias is a wonderful resort located between two gorges of Kourtaliotis and Kotsyfos. The beautiful natural landscape, which offers the visitor both relaxation on its beautiful beaches, as well as entertainment in its bars and seaside cafes. At Mariou which is a small village with a beautufil view of Plakias we will eat a delicious, traditional meal in the tavern of the same name (optional).
