The Highlands of Crete

The Highlands of Crete

This tour is taking us up to Psiloritis mountain, visiting its traditional villages and enjoying the stunning view of the original mainland.

Axos – Wooden Museum

Axos is a village located in the area of Milopotamos. It used to be an important ancient city with the same name. The ancient city was naturally fortified, built on terraces 600m above the sea level. Remains of the acropolis walls can still be seen today. A water source in the village center used to be famous because of a legend, according to which king Etearchus used to drink its water as a digestive in the 7th century BC. The village continues to maintain the traditional and old habited way of life. There we will have the opportunity to take a guided tour of the Museum and the Workshop and to discover, in addition to the aesthetic and artistic proposal, traditional, folklore, sociological and historical elements.

Anogia – Famous & traditional village

Anogia is considered as one of the most attractive, picturesque mountainous villages of Crete. It stands at an altitude of 750 metres on Mount Psiloritis, the highest mountain of Crete. Due to its secluded location, the village retains its strong authentic character, the local customs, traditional costumes and its old Cretan dialect. It is also famous for its contribution to tradition and culture. The Cretan weavings almost monopolize the merchandise of the stores in central alleys and streets of the village, while the cafes are a meeting point for locals and tourists who make a stop to drink raki and taste Cretan dishes.

Sphendoni Cave

The Sphendoni cave at the foot of Psiloritis is one of the greatest natural architectural creations in Greece. Inside you will find stalagmites and stalactites, formed by the flow of water over the years. By visiting the Cave, you will discover the impressive natural beauty of Crete. It is easily accessible from the village of Zoniana.

Zoniana - Wax Museum

Built at an altitude of 640 meters on the foothills of Psiloritis, hidden by scattered olive groves, the Zoniana spreads on the slopes of the famous mountain. The village has few unexploited pieces of land, with an ultimate coexistence of people and sheep. The rebellious spirit of the inhabitants contributed to the liberation struggles against the Turks and during the subsequent wars.

The "POTAMIANO" wax museum includes 87 wax figures, which in life size represent, before the eyes of the viewer, scenes from the history of Crete. In a space of about 1,000 sq.m., the visitor can see all the history of Crete and the most famous Cretan personalities in front of his eyes, like prime minister of Greece Eleftherios Venizelos, writer Nikos Kazantzakis, poet Vincenzo Cornaro, painter Dominikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco) and also many known fighters and scenes of the Cretan Revolution. Apart from these wax figures, the museum also exhibits a large collection of coins and banknotes from various periods.
